Preservation of Aviation Heritage

As an officially recognised representative body for the promotion and preservation of sport aviation and amateur aircraft construction in South Africa at the grassroots level, the Aircraft Homebuilders considers itself as an important player in the aviation related fields in South Africa.

To an extent, this interest also includes the conservation of South African Aviation Heritage facilities present at Swartkop in accordance the National Heritage Resource Act No 25 of 1999. The airfield is one of the oldest in South Africa and should therefore be conserved as a historic airport. The declaration as a conservation area under the act therefore places an obligation on the people of South Africa to conserve these facilities for all future generations of South Africans.

Through the years, AHASA have established a very good relationship with South African Air Force (SAAF) Museum through the organisation, Friends of the SAAF Museum. AHASA members are still actively involved in restoration projects, which is being undertaken at several of the museums' facilities.

The number of restoration projects at the SAAF Museum, however has decreased dramatically over the last few years, and with that, the opportunity to expose the young aviation enthusiast to the world of aircraft construction and maintenance, in addition to flying experience.

AHASA positively contribute to the promotion of our country's aviation heritage through the active involvement and the conservation thereof through member participation.
